Should you take Part B at 65?
If you have active employer coverage from an employer with 20 or more employees, you can usually delay Part B without penalty and enrol later through a Special Enrolment Period. Under 20 employees, Medicare typically becomes primary whether you enrol or not, and delaying can leave you badly underinsured.
Three traps we see repeatedly in Chandler:

- HSA contributions must stop before Medicare begins, and Part A can be backdated up to six months — which can create a tax problem retroactively.
- Most people should still take Part A at 65 if it is premium-free, unless the HSA issue above applies.
When you do retire
Your Part B Special Enrolment Period and your six-month Medigap window both start when Part B starts, not when you turn 65. That is the sequence worth planning, because the Medigap window does not reopen and Arizona has no birthday rule.
