Medicare in Gilbert, Arizona

A younger east-valley town where Medicare usually arrives alongside a parent's care question.

Gilbert is one of the younger large towns in Maricopa County. Many of the Medicare conversations we have here are not about the person calling — they are about a parent, and they arrive at a difficult moment.

Helping a parent from Gilbert

Two situations come up most:

  • A parent moving to Arizona to be near you. Relocating out of their old plan's service area triggers a Special Enrolment Period, so they are not stuck until autumn. Their previous Advantage plan will not have a network here; Original Medicare and Medigap travel, Advantage plans do not.
  • A parent entering assisted living or needing long-term care. This is where families discover that Medicare does not pay for long-term custodial care. It covers skilled nursing under specific conditions for a limited period — days 21 to 100 carry $217 per day in 2026 — and not indefinite room and board. ALTCS is the Arizona programme that does, and unlike most states it has no waiting list.

If you are approaching 65 yourself

Gilbert has a high share of people still working at 65. The employer-coverage timing rules decide whether you should take Part B now or later, and getting that wrong creates a permanent penalty. The checklist →

Common questions

My parent is moving to Gilbert. Can they change plans?

Yes. Moving out of a plan's service area triggers a Special Enrolment Period, so they do not have to wait for the Annual Enrolment Period. Their existing Medicare Advantage plan will not have a network in Arizona, so a change is usually necessary rather than optional.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living or a nursing home?

Not for long-term custodial care. Medicare covers skilled nursing under specific conditions and for a limited period, with $217 per day coinsurance for days 21 through 100 in 2026. It does not cover indefinite room and board. In Arizona, ALTCS covers long-term care for those who qualify — and it is an entitlement with no waiting list.
